Billie Eilish puts Manchester at centre of new 3D concert film

Pop sensation Billie Eilish has joined forces with acclaimed filmmaker James Cameron to create an innovative 3D concert film, capturing her live performances in Manchester from last year. Known for his blockbuster works such as Titanic and Avatar, Cameron documented Eilish’s shows over four nights at the Co-op Live arena during her Hit Me Hard And Soft world tour, which marked the most extensive tour of her career to date.

The resulting film offers an immersive visual and auditory experience, serving as a heartfelt tribute to Eilish’s passionate and emotional fanbase. At the premiere held in London’s Leicester Square, Eilish expressed her deep affection for the Manchester audience, describing them as “one of my favourite audiences ever… I fricking love Manchester.” Fans, many of whom traveled to the capital for the event, eagerly lined balconies and windows for a chance to catch a glimpse of the star, leading to an explosion of screams as she arrived. Cameron humorously remarked on the fan frenzy, noting, “They didn’t do that for me!”

This collaboration came about thanks to a connection between Cameron’s wife, Suzy, and Eilish’s mother, Maggie Baird, through their shared environmental work. Eilish recalled the surprise of receiving an email from Cameron inviting her to film her concert in 3D: “Little old James Cameron sent me an email literally saying ‘would you be interested in making a movie of your concert in 3D?’ I had never even considered such a thing, it was such an amazing idea.” The film employs cutting-edge small 3D cameras that bring audiences closer than ever to the onstage action. Cameron recounted the challenge of capturing Eilish’s dynamic energy, joking about a cameraman tasked with keeping pace with her as she dashed across the stage: “I said ‘Billie, if he gets in your way, just mow him down – and she did!'”

The presence of the fans plays a central role in the movie, with Cameron highlighting their importance as a vital part of the film’s narrative. At the premiere, many fans were visibly overwhelmed by emotion, with one describing the occasion as “the happiest day of my life.” Throughout the documentary, individuals share how Eilish’s music has provided them with feelings of acceptance, safety, and understanding during difficult times. Eilish herself interacted warmly with fans both during the tour and at the premiere, taking photos, signing autographs, and even making a surprise appearance at a window, eliciting thunderous cheers. She reflected on her relationship with fans in the film, saying, “I wanna be the artist that I would be a fan of,” while showing the scratches on her hands caused by enthusiastic attendees.

While Eilish may have initially attempted to remain composed when meeting Cameron, he admitted he was an enthusiastic fan from the beginning. The singer appreciated Cameron’s perspective on transforming a live show into a film, saying, “Working with him was so magical in so many ways. He really opened my eyes to seeing it as a film, and I’d been so used to doing it as a show with a live audience on a tour.” Cameron suggested that the 3D format might even enhance the concert experience, allowing viewers to access behind-the-scenes moments such as vocal warm-ups and makeup sessions, places they could never reach in a traditional setting. Although Cameron doubts 3D will become the standard for concert films, he emphasizes the importance of live musical performance, especially in today’s era of AI, where authenticity can be uncertain.

Additionally, Eilish shared her ongoing excitement from a recent viral moment with Justin Bieber at Coachella. During the festival, Bieber invited her on stage and serenaded her with his song “One Less Lonely Girl,” a gesture arranged by his wife Hailey. Eilish described the experience as deeply meaningful: “That was very sacred to me in a way that’s hard to talk about or describe the feeling of.” She expressed her admiration for Bieber, calling him “literally my idol,” and praised Hailey for orchestrating the surprise. When asked about the direction of her upcoming fourth album, Eilish remained playfully uncertain, responding with a smile and, “I dunno. We’ll see.” The film Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) is scheduled for release on 7 May 2026
