Nicole Blain, a mother facing charges related to the death of her 19-day-old daughter, maintains her innocence, insisting she would never cause harm to her child. Blain claims that her baby, Thea Wilson, passed away due to a “tragic accident” rather than intentional harm. The incident occurred in July 2023 at Blain’s flat in Greenock, where she said she had taken a nap and later found Thea lying beside her crib on the floor.
During the ongoing trial at the High Court in Glasgow, Blain recounted being woken by a neighbour at her door, after which she discovered Thea in a distressed state, without a nappy or blanket. Previous testimony has included statements from Thea’s paternal grandmother, who mentioned that Blain had suggested another child present in the flat was responsible for the infant’s injuries. However, Blain clarified in court that she did not know how Thea sustained her injuries and rejected any attempt to blame others.
Prosecutors assert that Thea’s death was caused by violent shaking and blunt force trauma, citing injuries such as two broken ribs and three skull fractures indicative of being struck against a hard surface, alongside other signs consistent with shaking. Blain strongly denies these accusations, emphasizing, “never in a million years” would she harm her daughter and rejecting claims that she was trying to shift responsibility onto another child.
The trial also included cross-examination by Advocate depute Alan Cameron, who dismissed Blain’s suggestion that another child was responsible as “just nonsense,” accusing her of causing the injuries and then realizing the severity of the situation.
