Washington rapist jailed for deliberate HIV infections

A man convicted of raping multiple victims and deliberately transmitting HIV to five young men and two boys, aged 15 and 17, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 23 years. Adam Hall, 43, targeted vulnerable individuals he met either online or at bars in Newcastle over a period stretching from 2016 to 2023. Newcastle Crown Court heard how Hall’s actions were motivated by a desire to cause pain and suffering.

The victims described their experiences as deeply violating, resulting in lifelong trauma and chronic medical conditions. Judge Edward Bindloss condemned Hall’s conduct as selfish, highlighting the permanent impact on the future lives of those affected. Since Hall’s conviction, Northumbria Police reported that additional alleged victims have come forward, prompting an ongoing investigation.

During the trial, prosecutor Kama Melly KC revealed that Hall, diagnosed with HIV in 2010, was repeatedly warned by healthcare professionals about the risk he posed to others. Despite knowing the importance of taking medication to suppress his viral load and the legal obligation to disclose his HIV status to sexual partners, Hall chose not to comply. Instead, he falsely claimed he was following medical advice while intentionally engaging in risky sexual activity with vulnerable men in order to cause harm. His true intent, the prosecutor argued, was to exert dominance and inflict pain through violence and aggression.

Hall refused to attend his sentencing hearing, a stance Judge Bindloss described as consistent with his demonstrated indifference to his victims’ suffering. The judge emphasized that HIV remains a lifelong, irreversible condition requiring daily medication, a continual reminder for the victims of the trauma inflicted on them. Statements read aloud at court included testimony from one victim who was only 18 at the time of his assault and described feeling “disgusted, ashamed and completely alone.” Another victim, aged 17 when attacked, spoke of a life forever altered and expressed profound sorrow for the loss of the future he had once envisioned. A third victim, 19 at the time, recounted being “hurt in the most malicious way.”

Addressing Hall’s denial of responsibility, his barrister argued that, even if Hall was the source of infection, it was not intentional and disputed the prosecution’s assertion that Hall’s actions constituted a deliberate campaign of rape, suggesting instead that the assaults were opportunistic. However, the judge dismissed Hall’s claims, pointing to evidence revealing premeditation and repeated lies about his status, which deprived victims of the chance to seek timely treatment.

Additional charges included dealing drugs, with some substances being administered to a victim prior to being raped and infected. Although jurors could not reach a verdict on an alleged eighth rape, prosecutors have decided not to pursue a retrial. Hall remains categorized as a dangerous offender, posing a high risk to others. Authorities continue to encourage anyone who believes they may have been victimized by Hall to come forward as investigations proceed
