A 23-year-old aspiring social media influencer from Glasgow has been sentenced to 16 months in prison after being caught attempting to smuggle a large quantity of cannabis through Edinburgh Airport. Ellie Crampsie was found carrying 17 kilograms of the Class B drug in her suitcase upon returning from a holiday in Thailand. The drugs were valued at between £115,000 and £151,000.
During her court appearance at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, Crampsie stated that she had been coerced into transporting the cannabis by her ex-boyfriend. She explained that the suitcase containing the drugs, along with some female clothing, belonged to him. The court heard that Crampsie had an online presence as a promoter in Glasgow’s nightlife and events scene, with thousands of followers on Instagram and TikTok.
Sheriff Graeme Watson, who presided over the case, recognized that Crampsie had been “naive and potentially taken advantage of” due to an imbalance of power in her former relationship. He noted her awareness that her ex-partner was involved in drug activities and that she was asked specifically to carry the cannabis luggage. Despite this, he described her choice as “reckless” and considered imprisonment appropriate.
In mitigation, Crampsie’s lawyer argued that she played a “lesser role” in the drug operation and faced pressure from a “much older person” who exerted a controlling influence over her. While the court accepted her reduced culpability, the seriousness of the offense led to the custodial sentence.
