Counter-terrorism police have recently detained two additional individuals in connection with a suspected arson plot targeting a location linked to the Jewish community. The Metropolitan Police reported that a 19-year-old and a 26-year-old man were taken into custody in Watford on Tuesday and continue to be held for questioning.
Over the course of the last three days, nine arrests have been made as part of this ongoing investigation. Seven of those individuals who were initially arrested have since been released on strict bail conditions, according to the Met. Among those bailed are three men, aged 24, 25, and 26, who were apprehended in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, on Sunday evening. In addition, a 25-year-old man was arrested in Stevenage the following day, while on Monday, a 26-year-old man and two women aged 50 and 59 were detained near Birmingham.
The inquiry is also looking into an incident in Kensington Gardens where jars containing a non-hazardous substance were discovered on 17 April. Meanwhile, a 39-year-old man remains in custody after his arrest under the Terrorism Act on Tuesday. The police have obtained a warrant to extend his detention until Tuesday, 28 April. To date, counter-terrorism officers have arrested a total of 25 individuals in connection with these events.
In response to these incidents, police have increased both uniformed and plain-clothes patrols across north-west London. This enhanced presence includes regular surveillance outside Jewish places of worship, local businesses, and other significant community locations in an effort to deter further offenses and reassure the public. Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans, senior national coordinator of Counter Terrorism Policing, stressed the seriousness of the situation, warning, “My message to anyone even considering getting involved in this type of activity is this: the stakes are high and it is absolutely not worth the risk.
