Northern Ireland’s defence industry is set for significant expansion with plans to create hundreds of local jobs, officials announced. This development comes alongside the launch of the Northern Ireland Defence Growth Deal, an initiative backed by the UK government that will inject £50 million into technology companies and startups within the region.
This partnership involves collaboration between the Ministry of Defence, regional businesses, and Queen’s University Belfast. One of the key objectives of the deal is to support students by enhancing their skills in engineering and technology, fostering future talent in these critical fields.
At the launch event in Belfast, Defence Minister Luke Pollard and Northern Ireland Office Minister Matthew Patrick will meet with representatives from the local industry and academic institutions. Their visit highlights the government’s commitment to strengthening the defence sector in Northern Ireland.
Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly spoke positively about the deal’s impact, emphasizing the area’s strong history in aerospace, defence, and security. “Northern Ireland has really strong track record in relation to aerospace and defence and security,” she stated. Little-Pengelly also expressed her readiness to advocate for the industry, noting its importance to job creation and regional stability. She underlined the link between robust defence capabilities and peace, saying, “Peace and stability comes through strong defence, that’s the reality. The citizens of Northern Ireland and the UK and beyond need that strong defence.”
