Swinney turns down Trump invitation to White House state banquet

Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney, has declined an invitation from former US President Donald Trump to attend a state banquet at the White House scheduled for April 28. The event is linked to the upcoming state visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla to the United States. According to a statement from the Scottish government, Swinney “politely declined” the invitation, citing his commitments related to the campaign ahead of the Scottish Parliament election next month.

Earlier this week, Trump spoke with Swinney on the phone for about four minutes, with the invitation to the banquet being the main topic of their discussion. A spokesperson for Swinney confirmed that he was unable to accept the offer due to the demands of preparing for the election, which is set for May 7. Throughout the election campaign, Swinney will maintain his role as Scotland’s First Minister.

This is not the first interaction between Swinney and Trump. In September of the previous year, Swinney met with the former US president at the White House to talk about a prospective agreement aimed at exempting Scotch whisky from US import tariffs. Following that meeting, Swinney also attended a state banquet hosted in honor of Trump at Windsor Castle, an event remembered for its formal reception. President Trump has also expressed that he maintains a warm relationship with King Charles.

The forthcoming royal visit to the US, which takes place from April 27 to 30, marks King Charles’ first official state trip to America since Queen Elizabeth II’s visit in 2007.
