Strabane: Corrie Anthony McKenna denies throwing boiling water over Richard McCrossan at courthouse

A man has been charged after an incident involving boiling water at Strabane courthouse. The event took place on Thursday morning inside Strabane Magistrates’ Court in County Tyrone. The individual accused is Corrie Anthony McKenna, aged 34, who resides at Sheskin Park in Greysteel. He appeared in front of Dungannon Magistrates Court on Saturday in relation to the case.

McKenna faces multiple charges, including assault causing actual bodily harm, attempted grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon—a kettle containing boiling water—with intent to commit an offence. He has denied all the allegations. The victim in the case sustained burns to the face, neck, and shoulders and was initially treated at Altnagelvin Hospital in Londonderry before being moved to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for further care.

The charges stem from an incident occurring before a hearing connected to Dylan McCrossan’s case, who is accused of the murder of Stephen Holmes in February the previous year. The attack reportedly targeted Richard McCrossan, the brother of Dylan McCrossan, within the court’s waiting area. Court proceedings revealed that McKenna, believed to be a friend of the murder victim Stephen Holmes, threw boiling water at Richard while standing about one meter away around 11:00 BST before fleeing the scene.

Following the incident, tensions escalated into a scuffle between the families of the McCrossans and Stephen Holmes. McKenna was subsequently arrested at his home in Greysteel. A detective confirmed in court that evidence connects McKenna to the charges, including the discovery of a distinctive orange T-shirt at his residence. Despite admitting his presence at the courthouse, McKenna continues to deny committing the assault. The judge refused bail, citing the gravity of the assault, and the next court date has been set for 13 May
