Liverpool City Council has announced the appointment of Maisie Taylor as the Accelerator City Sustainability Project Manager within its Culture team, reinforcing the city’s status as a frontrunner in culture-driven climate initiatives. In this position, Maisie will play a key role in advancing sustainability-related projects connected to Liverpool’s Accelerator City programme. Collaborating closely with both the Culture and Sustainability teams, as well as external partners, she will work to integrate environmental responsibility into cultural events, activities, and the broader creative industries.
A significant part of Maisie’s responsibilities will involve ensuring that sustainability is a core component of major upcoming sporting events in Liverpool. These events include the stage 2 finish of the Tour de France, an inclusive multisport and culture festival, and EURO 2028. Her role will focus on weaving environmental, social, and economic sustainability goals into the planning, execution, and legacy of these large-scale occasions. This approach highlights the city’s commitment to balancing high-profile cultural and sporting events with sustainable practices.
Liverpool holds the distinction of being the world’s first “Accelerator City” under the United Nations’ Entertainment and Culture for Climate Action (ECCA) initiative. This recognition is due to Liverpool’s pioneering efforts in testing innovative carbon reduction techniques within live music, film, and television industries. The Accelerator City programme designates Liverpool as a hub for developing scalable, locally rooted solutions that can also be shared internationally. Furthermore, Liverpool City Council’s leadership in this programme has garnered global attention, earning a nomination for the 2026 Music Cities Award in the Music & Climate Action category. These awards celebrate projects worldwide that leverage music and culture to foster positive social, economic, and environmental change.
The Accelerator City programme unites local government, cultural organisations, industry stakeholders, and researchers to pilot sustainable cultural production methods, demonstrating how major events and screen activities can maintain a low carbon footprint while supporting a vibrant creative economy. Maisie’s new role will build on this foundation, supporting the coordination and delivery of Accelerator City initiatives within the Culture team and ensuring sustainability continues to be embedded in cultural planning, programming, and partnerships. Maisie joined Liverpool City Council in September 2024 through the LGA Impact Graduate Scheme, which admits three graduates annually (with up to six participants concurrently). This scheme is part of the Council’s strategy to nurture internal talent and develop future leaders. Graduates in the programme undertake three to four placements across two years within different departments while working toward a CMI Level 7 qualification in leadership and management.
