Manchester City’s captain, Bernardo Silva, has announced that he will be departing the club upon the expiration of his contract at the end of this season. The Portuguese midfielder, aged 31, has been a vital part of the team since his transfer from Monaco in 2017, having played in 451 matches where he scored 76 goals and provided 77 assists.
Throughout his time at Manchester City, Silva has amassed an impressive collection of silverware. His latest achievement was winning the Carabao Cup last month, marking his 15th major trophy with the club. Among these honours is the historic treble secured during the 2022-23 campaign. Additionally, Silva played a key role in the team’s 2017-18 Premier League title triumph, where City reached 100 points, as well as in the domestic quadruple won in 2018-19. He has also contributed to the club’s dominance with four successive league titles from 2021 to 2024.
Reflecting on his tenure, Silva shared his sentiments on Instagram, saying, “What we won and achieved together is a legacy that will forever be cherished in my heart.” He also fondly recalled the milestones the club accomplished during his stay: “The Centurions, the domestic quadruple, the Treble, the four in a row and much more. It wasn’t that bad.” As a testament to his longevity and importance, Silva is the only player from Manchester City’s recent period to rank among the top 10 all-time appearance makers for the club, tied for eighth place with Mike Summerbee.
Following the exit of Kevin De Bruyne last season, Silva took on the role of club captain. Over his eight seasons at City, he has secured six Premier League titles. Presently, Manchester City sits second in the league standings and will face Southampton in the FA Cup semi-finals on April 25. Addressing the fans once more, Silva said, “My main goal as a player was to always play with passion so you guys (the fans) could feel proud and well represented on the pitch. I hope you felt that every single game.” He concluded by expressing his lasting bond with the club and supporters: “I arrived as a Man City player, I leave as one more of you, a Man City supporter for life. Keep supporting this young team and I’m pretty sure they will bring you a lot of new fantastic memories in the future. Let’s enjoy together these last weeks and fight for what this season still brings us.”
