Former Arsenal player Thomas Partey denies two new counts of rape

Thomas Partey, a former Arsenal footballer, has pleaded not guilty to two additional rape charges. The 32-year-old appeared at Southwark Crown Court, where he denied accusations of raping a woman in London in December 2020 on two separate occasions.

Partey, who transferred from Arsenal to Villarreal last summer, was previously charged in July with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, related to incidents alleged to have taken place in 2021 and 2022. He has also pleaded not guilty to those earlier charges. Because of the new allegations, the trial, initially set for November this year, may be postponed until January 2027.

In total, the footballer faces seven rape charges and one sexual assault charge involving four different women, all of which he has denied. On Monday, Judge Tony Baumgartner, the Recorder of Westminster, approved the decision to have all allegations heard in a single trial.

During the court appearance, Partey was dressed in dark grey trousers, a black jumper over a white shirt, and black shoes. He confirmed his identity and entered the two not guilty pleas. While he was absent from the initial hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court when the charges were first brought before a judge, his lawyer had indicated that he would plead not guilty. Partey remains on bail throughout the proceedings and must not contact the alleged victims. Having joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 for around £45 million, Partey left Arsenal last June and is anticipated to participate for Ghana in the World Cup this summer. His next court date is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on 14 May
