Mohammed Sultan Saleh, a 22-year-old from Liverpool, has been detained in the US state of Maine following allegations that he crossed the border illegally from Canada. Saleh, along with three other men reportedly from Liverpool, faces charges related to unlawful entry after they were arrested on April 3rd.
According to official records, Saleh was the sole director of the now-defunct takeaway business Shuga Shuga, which was based in Toxteth, Liverpool. The BBC confirmed his identity as one of the individuals involved in the case. Saleh and his three co-defendants appeared in court recently, where they all entered not guilty pleas concerning the charge of entering the United States at a location that is not a designated port of entry.
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has acknowledged the situation, stating that it is providing support to the four British nationals detained in the US. A spokesperson for the FCDO affirmed that they are maintaining contact with local authorities to assist the individuals involved. Saleh’s family reportedly learned about his arrest only after reaching out to the British Embassy following media coverage of the incident.
Requests for comments have been made to both the Department of Homeland Security and US Customs and Border Protection, though no responses have been received at this time. The case remains under legal scrutiny as the men await further proceedings
