Man jailed for killing wife who jumped from bridge

A man has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being found guilty of causing the death of his wife, who died after jumping from a motorway bridge. Kimberly Milne, aged 28, died in July 2023 on the A90 in Dundee when she was hit by several vehicles following the fall. Her husband, Lee Milne, 40, was convicted by a jury of culpable homicide and was also found guilty of domestic abuse at multiple residences throughout the city.

This case represents a first in Scotland, where the court held Milne responsible for his wife’s death even though she took her own life. Authorities emphasized that Kimberly was visibly frightened of Lee and that her decision to jump was an attempt to escape the abuse. Prosecutors revealed that Kimberly endured serious violence over the 18 months leading up to her death, including physical assaults such as choking, hair-pulling, hitting, along with verbal abuse like shouting and swearing. After serving his sentence, Milne will remain under community supervision for an additional three years.

During the trial, it was disclosed that Milne had previously been placed on the sex offenders’ register following a 2024 conviction for sexually assaulting two young boys. Judge Lady Drummond commented, “Following your actions, Kimberly Milne reached a point of despair such that she climbed over the barrier of a road bridge and fell to her death.” She also acknowledged the grief of Kimberly’s family, describing the victim as a “one-in-a-million” individual who was deeply loved. The judge noted that no sentence could repair the loss experienced by the family.

Throughout the proceedings, the court heard details of the couple’s relationship, which began in late 2021 and culminated in marriage in September 2022. The abuse reportedly commenced early in their union and persisted until Kimberly’s death. Incidents included choking in early 2022, and a violent episode when Milne dragged her by the hair but later apologized. Kimberly also confided to police about reading threatening messages and discovering Milne’s alleged infidelities, which led to physical violence causing her to lose consciousness. Witnesses testified about witnessing Kimberly’s fear and Milne’s aggressive behaviour, supported by CCTV footage showing Kimberly trying to avoid confrontation as Milne shouted and followed her.

Kimberly’s mother described how Milne visited her house after Kimberly’s death, providing a disturbing account of the events leading to the tragedy. Detective Chief Inspector Craig Kelly, who led the investigation, branded Milne a “violent bully” responsible for both emotional and physical abuse, stating, “Witness testimony and CCTV evidence painted a picture of quite horrendous domestic abuse.” He expressed relief that Milne was incarcerated, emphasizing the severity of the violence inflicted on
