The UK government has granted approval for the Springwell Solar Farm, which is set to become the largest solar power-producing site in the country. Situated between Lincoln and Sleaford, near Navenby in Lincolnshire, this extensive development will provide electricity for approximately 180,000 homes, according to the project’s developer, EDF Power Solutions UK. The plan includes a battery storage facility and will span an area comparable to 1,700 football pitches.
Despite the green light from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, local residents and community groups have voiced strong opposition. Marc Williams, representing the Springwell Solar Action Group, expressed his frustration with the approval, stating he was “disgusted” and pledged to continue opposing the project. Concerns raised by opponents include the loss of valuable farmland, potential harm to the landscape, as well as safety issues connected to the lithium-ion batteries planned for the site.
Energy Minister Michael Shanks emphasized the importance of increasing domestic renewable energy production, noting that solar power remains one of the most affordable energy sources. “We are driving further and faster for clean homegrown power that we control to protect the British people and bring down bills for good,” he said. Shanks also highlighted recent conflicts in the Middle East as a reminder of the need to reduce reliance on volatile international fossil fuel markets in favor of secure, homegrown energy.
Local voices continue to express disappointment. Williams accused the Energy Secretary of ignoring community concerns, describing the decision as a disregard for democracy that threatens roughly 4,000 acres in the area. Rob Kendrick, a Conservative councillor who opposed the project during the inquiry, called the ruling “sad news for Lincolnshire and its residents,” fearing the impact on the landscape and tourism, which contributes around £2 billion annually to the local economy. Meanwhile, EDF’s Matthew Boulton welcomed the approval as a significant milestone, committing to ongoing collaboration with local communities and promising measures to minimize the impact of construction while delivering lasting benefits.
