A man tragically lost his life during a baptism ceremony in Birmingham, leading to a charge of gross negligence manslaughter against a pastor. The victim, Robert Smith, 61, from Brixton, London, drowned on 8 October 2023 at a residence on Slade Road, Erdington.
Cheryl Bartley, aged 48 and residing in Erdington, has been formally charged with one count of gross negligence manslaughter related to her role in officiating the baptism. According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Bartley is scheduled to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on 14 May.
The incident occurred during a baptism conducted by Life Changing Ministries, which took place in a small garden pool on the property. At the time, the event was being streamed live on the church’s Facebook page, but the broadcast was abruptly ended and the footage was subsequently removed. It is noted that Smith had traveled to Birmingham specifically for the baptism and had been a member of the church for four years, as indicated by a Facebook post made at the time of the incident.
Malcolm McHaffie, who leads the CPS’s special crime division, stated that the CPS had collaborated closely with West Midlands Police during the investigation. He emphasized the importance of respecting the ongoing legal process, reminding the public that the defendant is entitled to a fair trial and urging against any reporting or online sharing that could prejudice the proceedings
