Price of first class stamp rises to £1.80

Royal Mail has increased the cost of stamps once again amid criticism over its inability to meet delivery targets. As of now, the price for a first class stamp has gone up by 10p to £1.80, while second class postage has risen by 4p to 91p. This marks the eighth rise in stamp prices over the past five years, reflecting ongoing challenges for the postal service.

The company explains that these hikes are essential due to a decline in letter volumes combined with a growing number of delivery addresses. Despite this justification, many businesses and consumers have expressed dissatisfaction, especially given Royal Mail’s recent underperformance. Currently, only 77% of first class letters reach their destination within one working day, falling short of the 93% target.

Energy price pressures, linked to the conflict in Iran, are further impacting Royal Mail’s costs. Starting next month, business customers will also experience higher fees as the company increases its domestic fuel surcharge by 5% and international rates by 5.5%. Reflecting on the past decade, the price of a first class stamp has nearly tripled, rising from 64p ten years ago to £1.80 today.

Richard Travers, Royal Mail’s managing director of letters, emphasized that price adjustments are made with careful consideration, balancing affordability against rising delivery costs. Meanwhile, businesses such as Dean Morris’s greeting cards company report that slower and less reliable delivery is harming their reputations, with customers frequently following up on orders well after posting. Consumer groups and organizations like Citizens Advice have criticized the price increase, urging that future rises should correlate with service improvements.
