'Unbelievable!: Backshall overjoyed at rare sighting of orcas

Steve Backshall, the well-known wildlife explorer, expressed his excitement after encountering two of the United Kingdom’s last surviving orcas. He referred to these magnificent creatures as “international celebrities,” highlighting their rarity and significance.

The two male killer whales, named John Coe and Aquarius, are the final members of the West Coast Community pod. These bulls were recently observed near Lizard Point, off the coast of Cornwall, an area close to where Backshall resides in Penzance.

This sighting marked the first time the brothers had been seen in the waters off Cornwall’s west coast since May 2021. Backshall managed to capture footage of the orcas during their appearance on Wednesday, sharing a rare glimpse of these elusive marine mammals.
