Man who tried to abduct children from Cardiff splash pad sentenced

A 34-year-old homeless man, Moynul Janu, has been sentenced to indefinite detention in a mental health facility following his attempts to abduct children in South Wales. His first known incident occurred on 3 July 2025, at a free-to-use splash pad located in Victoria Park, Cardiff, where he was apprehended. The next day, Janu was found attempting to enter a nursery in Bridgend county, leading to the implementation of lockdown procedures at the facility to prevent him from gaining access to the children inside.

Details presented at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court revealed that Janu approached children playing in the water fountains at Victoria Park. On one occasion, he touched a girl under five years old on her leg. When the child’s mother intervened, Janu obstructed their interaction by standing between them and declaring he was “grabbing the kids.” He physically took hold of the arms of two children before being confronted by the mothers, who shouted and blocked him. Despite being removed from the park by police officers, he was subsequently released.

Further evidence outlined how Janu tapped one child on the head and then appeared to speak into a smart watch, which he later claimed was not operational and denied having a phone. He told staff at the park that he was homeless but originally from Bangladesh, where he claimed to be married with children, and that he was searching for employment. Following the park incident, the next day’s encounter at the nursery in Bridgend involved Janu pushing past an employee and attempting to access a locked area housing seventeen children by punching numbers into a keypad. This led nursery staff to initiate lockdown protocols, preventing him from entering the secured space before he left on his own after about fifteen minutes.

Victim impact statements read in court revealed the lasting distress caused by Janu’s actions. One mother recounted how her daughter woke up screaming in fear after the encounter, saying, “he is coming to get me.” Another parent expressed fears about Janu’s intentions, recounting that she believed “he would have taken her if he’d had the opportunity” and describing ongoing anxiety about the man potentially targeting her child again, even at home. The court was also informed of Janu’s prior history of mental illness
