Longer hours for Recycling Centres

Residents of Liverpool now benefit from extended opening hours at Household Waste Recycling Centres throughout the spring and summer period. Starting from Wednesday, April 1, the centres will be accessible daily from 8:00 am until 8:00 pm, providing greater flexibility for recycling efforts.

Within the region, there are a total of 16 Household Waste Recycling Centres managed by Veolia on behalf of the Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA). Liverpool itself hosts two of these facilities, located at Old Swan on Cheadle Avenue (L13 3AF) and Otterspool on Jericho Lane in Aigburth (L17 5AR). Residents are encouraged to visit www.recycleright.org.uk to find out which items are accepted at their preferred centre.

These recycling centres are popular and often busy, especially during peak periods, so planning visits ahead of time is advisable. For those arriving with a van or large trailer, there is a booking system available at www.merseysidewda.gov.uk to help manage demand and ensure smooth entry.

Lesley Worswick, Chief Executive of MRWA, highlighted the variety of materials accepted at the centres, saying, “The Recycling Centres accept a range of household materials for recycling, from batteries, cans and cardboard, through to garden clippings, glass bottles, wood, and white goods. They also accept lesser-known items such as food and drink cartons, clothes, hard plastics and electrical items including ‘Disposable Vape’ bins which help provide safe disposal and recycling routes for the millions of vapes currently thrown away across the country.” She added that the longer daylight hours in spring and summer allow the centres to remain open later. Paul Cannon, General Manager for Veolia Merseyside and Halton, also emphasized the benefits of extended hours, stating, “Spring is a great time for a clear out and the extended hours mean more opportunities for residents to recycle. Our dedicated teams are on hand to make every visit as smooth as possible, and to ensure everything that can be recycled, is recycled. To keep everyone safe, we’re reminding residents to wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, gloves when handling materials, and to keep children and pets in the car.”
