Former Tata Steel workers win £1m lottery jackpot

A group of former employees from Tata Steel in south Wales are celebrating a £1 million prize from the National Lottery. These 15 individuals, who once endured 14-hour shifts together in the company’s finance department, formed a lottery syndicate seven years ago. Their original intent was to maintain camaraderie during the demanding workweeks at the Port Talbot steel plant by each contributing £5 towards the lottery ticket.

The syndicate, known as the Tata Steel Syndicate, has kept the group connected over the years, even after many members left the company. Paul Davy, aged 61 and from Port Talbot, played a key role in sustaining the group’s bond by sending hopeful emails about potential big wins. Paul described the lottery participation more as “an opportunity to donate to charity – with the chance of winning as a bonus,” and expressed great disbelief when he finally discovered their winning numbers. He recalled the moment: “I couldn’t believe it – a message just popped up on the app. I was checking Saturday’s draw when a message flashed up. I thought it must be an error.”

Each winner will receive a share of £66,666, and they plan to use their prize money on paying off mortgages, funding holidays, renovating homes, and purchasing new cars. Reflecting his own plans, Paul said he intended to buy a new vehicle and possibly take a Mediterranean cruise with his partner, recalling a previous enjoyable experience on a cruise despite his partner’s initial apprehension about boats.

Among the other winners are Gill Furlong, Christine Davies, Sally Wise, Julie Lambert, Allan Evans, Ian Howells, and Raja Prasad, who all reside in close proximity. Paul expressed enthusiasm for the reunion, noting, “This win has given us the perfect excuse to celebrate together properly.” Though some members occasionally met up informally for “a game of pool and a beer,” the entire group had not gathered in years until this victory. Andy Carter from Allwyn, the National Lottery operator, extended congratulations and best wishes for the group’s future happiness. The win comes in the context of recent job losses at the Port Talbot steelworks, which has been a key part of the community for over a century, as Tata Steel underwent restructuring in 2024
