Steven Lyons, a well-known figure in Scotland’s gangland scene, was arrested upon arrival at Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport and is now scheduled to be deported to Spain. The 45-year-old was detained shortly after landing on a flight from Singapore. On the same day, his wife, Amanda Lyons, was taken into custody in Dubai. Both are wanted in connection with alleged crimes committed in Spain, linked to a transnational criminal organization.
Authorities in Indonesia confirmed that Lyons, who had been the subject of an Interpol alert, will be deported on Wednesday. When seen leaving police headquarters, he was escorted by officers, wearing orange prison overalls and a black face mask, with his hands bound in plastic cable ties. Bali police chief Daniel Adityajaya described Lyons as the leader of a large-scale international syndicate involved in drug trafficking and money laundering. Additionally, Interpol’s Indonesia bureau secretary Untung Widyatmoko stated that Lyons’ criminal network operated across several countries, including Spain, Scotland, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Turkey.
The arrest coincided with coordinated raids carried out on Friday targeting members of Lyons’ organization. These simultaneous operations took place in locations across Scotland such as Bellshill, Glasgow, Gartcosh, Whitburn, Caldercruix, Cumbernauld, and Coatbridge, as well as in Barcelona and the Malaga region of Spain. The sweeps resulted in thirteen arrests—eight in Scotland and five in Spain. Charges include drug offenses for seven individuals and conspiracy alongside assault for another. Police Scotland indicated that this investigation predates the violent gang feud that heated up across central Scotland in recent months.
Steven Lyons is known as the head of the Lyons clan, entrenched in a long-standing and deadly conflict with the rival Daniel gang for over two decades. Previously, Lyons survived a shooting incident in Glasgow in 2006 that killed his cousin. He subsequently relocated to Spain before moving to Dubai. His criminal connections include ties with the Kinahan crime group based in Dubai, and he reportedly formed a relationship with Daniel Kinahan, a former boxing promoter and son of the group’s founder, while living on the Costa del Sol.
