Portadown murder: Man remanded into custody after court appearance

A man has been formally charged with murder following a violent incident in Portadown that resulted in the death of 49-year-old Rolandas Kvederis. Authorities found Mr. Kvederis with multiple stab wounds, including seven inflicted to his neck and lower back, with a knife tip embedded into the bone of his neck.

The accused, 51-year-old Lithuanian national Ruslanas Kovalkovas, appeared at Lisburn Magistrates’ Court to face the charge. He denied intentionally killing Mr. Kvederis, stating through an interpreter, “I did not kill him; I was defending myself.” Evidence presented in court revealed that police responded to an emergency call made by the daughter of another occupant of the property, where both men lived.

On arrival, officers discovered a large pool of blood and found Mr. Kvederis at the top of the stairs. A detective sergeant explained that the victim had been stabbed, and knives were located near the scene—one beside a sink and a smaller one on the kitchen table. Despite the severity of the incident, no signs of a struggle or disturbance were evident within the flat. During questioning, Kovalkovas initially remained silent but later claimed he acted in self-defense, stating that Mr. Kvederis had attacked him with a knife.

The detective sergeant further testified that Kovalkovas told police about a dispute in the flat, indicating that Mr. Kvederis had been heavily intoxicated and had begun poking him with a knife. Kovalkovas recounted shouting, “I am being killed,” before making a “reflex movement” stabbing Mr. Kvederis three times in the throat. The court was also informed that the deceased bore no defensive wounds. Kovalkovas’ solicitor argued the case was one of self-defense, with the accused asserting, “it was me or him.” However, the police emphasized their responsibility to protect the public and noted the violent nature of the attack. It was also confirmed that the matter would ultimately be determined by a jury.

Kovalkovas was denied bail and is being held in custody pending his next court appearance, scheduled for 24 April, which will take place via videolink
