Labour MP Sarah Owen has announced a halt to her face-to-face meetings with constituents after experiencing three separate security incidents over the past three weeks. Representing Luton North, Owen revealed the decision on social media, expressing her frustration at needing to take such steps to protect both her team and visitors at her constituency surgeries.
Despite describing herself as an “accessible MP,” Owen confirmed that two men involved in the incidents had been arrested, while a third event led to one of her surgeries being stopped prematurely. However, she chose not to provide further specifics regarding these episodes in her public statement. Both Owen and Bedfordshire Police have been approached for additional commentary but have not yet responded.
Constituency “surgeries” are typically held weekly by MPs in local offices, offering the public a chance to discuss issues directly, usually by making an appointment. Owen lamented a cultural shift, saying, “Something wonderful about British society is being lost because of the dehumanisation of others.” She also pointed out the growing security concerns facing MPs today.
Owen noted that police frequently advise MPs and their staff on security measures, and many no longer publicly announce their surgery details. She mentioned, “I know of several MPs in the East of England who over the last couple of years have had serious concerns about their and their staffs’ safety,” adding that at least one MP had to pursue legal action against a constituent.
