Volta a Catalunya: Tom Pidcock out of race after 'horror' fall down ravine on stage five

Following medical examinations, Pidcock has been withdrawn from the remainder of the race, which is set to conclude on Sunday. The decision came after a crash that resulted in injuries to the rider.

Team doctor Lorenz Emmert provided details about Pidcock’s condition, explaining that he likely sustained damage to bones and ligaments, especially in his right knee and wrist. Emmert stated, “Unfortunately we had to make the decision to take him out of the race. Further clinical evaluation and imaging will follow in the next days.”

Earlier this month, Pidcock achieved notable success by winning Milano-Torino and securing second place in Milan-San Remo, finishing behind the world champion Tadej Pogacar. Reflecting on his departure, Pidcock, a two-time Olympic cross-country mountain bike champion, said, “We did everything to try to make it to the start [of stage six] but it’s not possible.” He added, “I fought to finish the stage yesterday to make sure I had the option to continue. Now the focus is on recovery, and I’ll be back.”

Meanwhile, Vingegaard of Team Visma-Lease a Bike claimed victory in the latest stage, finishing 51 seconds ahead. This win extended his overall lead in the general classification to 57 seconds
