Last One Laughing: Maisie Adam reveals her nightmare opponent

Maisie Adam, one of the comedians featured on the second season of Prime Video’s “Last One Laughing,” described her experience on the show as “absolute torture.” The concept of the program is straightforward: contestants must try to make each other laugh while themselves maintaining a poker face. However, being confined in a room with nine other top comedic talents makes this challenge far from easy. Maisie revealed to BBC Newsbeat that among her fellow competitors, the returning champion Bob Mortimer was her most daunting rival.

The show’s rules are simple yet unforgiving. Over a six-hour period, participants compete to break each other’s composure through humor. If a contestant laughs or even smiles, they receive a yellow card from host Jimmy Carr. A second lapse results in a red card, which means elimination from the competition. Maisie likened the atmosphere to sitting at the back of a classroom where laughter is forbidden, but everyone’s determined to make each other crack smiles. She noted, “You’re not meant to be laughing, but you can see all your mates trying to make you laugh, and they’ve got that twinkle in their eye.”

Season two features an impressive lineup of comedians including Diane Morgan, Mel Giedroyc, and Romesh Ranganathan. Despite this strong cast, Maisie admitted feeling particularly anxious about facing Bob Mortimer. The previous season’s champion, Mortimer’s unexpected return was met with surprise and concern from the new contestants. “When we were doing our interviews beforehand, they were asking: ‘Who would be your worst nightmare?’ And we said Bob Mortimer, but thankfully he won’t be in. He smashed it in season one, and because he was on season one none of us thought he’d be in this one,” Maisie explained. She also mentioned Alan Carr, winner of “Celebrity Traitors,” as another formidable contender, describing him as “funny before he even opens his mouth because of the looks he’s giving.”

“Last One Laughing” has gained considerable success on Prime Video, reaching the number two spot in the UK streaming charts and earning praise from critics who hailed it as one of the funniest shows on British television. Maisie expressed enthusiasm about the show spotlighting newer comedians alongside established names, sharing that just a few years ago she was performing in modest venues with minimal backstage facilities. She sees the series as part of a vibrant British comedy scene that attracts admiration from international performers and offers opportunities for emerging talent. Reflecting on the broader comedy landscape, she acknowledged that there was a period when the same faces dominated TV comedy panels but believes supporting the next generation of comedians is essential for the circuit’s vitality
