Former council leader guilty of sexually assaulting young men

Jordan Linden, a former leader of North Lanarkshire Council and former chair of the Scottish Youth Parliament, has been convicted of multiple sexual offences involving young men. The 30-year-old, who resigned from his council leadership position in 2022 following the emergence of allegations, was found guilty of five counts of sexual assault. Initially, Linden faced 15 charges at Falkirk Sheriff Court, which included allegations of sexual assault, sexual communication, and stalking.

The offences, which spanned a decade from 2011 to 2021, also involved Linden sending unwanted sexual messages to seven teenagers, some as young as 14. These messages contained inappropriate images, including photos of Linden in a bath and explicit pictures of his genitalia. During the trial, one witness recounted an incident that occurred on a Young Scots for Independence trip to Barcelona, where Linden allegedly climbed into the witness’s bed at a youth hostel and attempted to kiss and caress him. Linden denied these claims, stating he merely gave the individual a cuddle before returning to his own bed.

Additional testimony included an event from 2019 following the Dundee Pride parade with Out For Independence, the LGBT wing of the SNP. According to an SNP party official, Linden locked him inside a bathroom and attempted to make him urinate while observing. Throughout the proceedings, Linden maintained his innocence, asserting that some encounters were consensual or did not occur. He expressed feeling “gutted, betrayed, burned and done over” by the accusations against him.

While Linden was found guilty on several charges, he was also acquitted of six other offences related to stalking and sexual assault. Sheriff Christopher Shead presiding over the case decided to delay sentencing until May 5 to allow time for relevant reports to be prepared. Following the verdict, Linden was released on bail pending the sentencing hearing
