Former BBC presenter Alex Belfield recalled to prison

Alex Belfield, a former BBC local radio presenter, has been returned to prison after breaching the conditions of his licence. Belfield, who hails from Nottingham, was initially sentenced to five and a half years in September 2022 following his conviction on four counts of stalking various broadcasters. Among those targeted was Jeremy Vine, a Channel 5 presenter and BBC Radio 2 DJ.

The Prison and Probation Service confirmed last Thursday that Belfield had been recalled to custody the previous month. However, the authorities have not revealed the specific nature of the licence violations that led to his recall. During his trial, Belfield attracted attention by making and posting videos on YouTube, where he continues to maintain a following of 345,000 subscribers.

Jeremy Vine had strongly criticized Belfield during the court proceedings, referring to him as “the Jimmy Savile of trolling.” The court found Belfield guilty of stalking offenses occurring between 2012 and 2021. Along with his prison sentence, restraining orders were issued that prohibit him from contacting his victims.

After his release from prison last year, Belfield spoke openly about the legal restrictions imposed upon him in a January 25 interview with podcaster Liam Tuffs on YouTube. A spokesperson from the Prison and Probation Service emphasized their commitment to enforcing the law, stating, “As this case shows, we do not hesitate to send offenders back to prison if they break the rules.
