The partner of a man seriously injured in the Nottingham attacks has expressed deep frustration with the organizations involved in the public inquiry, claiming they have repeatedly caused distress to the victims’ families. The inquiry itself is investigating the circumstances before and after the tragic events that unfolded on 13 June 2023, when Valdo Calocane carried out a deadly assault.
Calocane first fatally stabbed three people: students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, along with grandfather Ian Coates. He then proceeded to deliberately strike several pedestrians — including Wayne Birkett, Sharon Miller, and Marcin Gawronski — using a van. Wayne, who suffered a traumatic brain injury so severe that he lost all memories of his life prior to the attack, and his partner Tracey Hodgson have both testified about their experiences and the difficulties faced following the tragedy. Marcin Gawronski, however, has not participated in the inquiry.
In her testimony, Tracey Hodgson emphasized the shortcomings of the police, the NHS, and other authorities, stating that these entities “prolonged their suffering.” She added, “We are learning of so many failures.” Tracey also criticized the lack of transparency from the start, saying, “All the organisations involved in this inquiry should have been open from the beginning. They have caused extra suffering for the families, which could have been prevented, and they have prolonged their suffering when they should have been allowed to just get on with grieving. You have tortured these families over and over again.”
Wayne expressed his gratitude towards the inquiry team and the importance of uncovering the truth. On the day of the attacks, he was heading to work as a forklift driver when Calocane purposely veered into him with the van, launching him several feet into the air. By that point, Calocane had already carried out the fatal stabbings and was driving the vehicle belonging to one of his victims, Ian Coates. Wayne sustained severe injuries, including two skull fractures and multiple broken bones, which led to a hospital stay spanning over six weeks, followed by rehabilitation. He recalled the confusion and pain he felt, noting that he was not given clear explanations during his hospitalization.
Wayne and Tracey were assigned a family liaison officer named Detective Constable Raj Johal, who they described as friendly but lacking in communication regarding the attack details. Tracey revealed that Johal withheld significant information, such as Calocane’s prior interactions with law enforcement. Calocane had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2020 and had been detained under the Mental Health Act multiple times between 2020 and 2023, with involvement in several violent incidents predating the killings.
