A British couple imprisoned in Iran on espionage allegations have described their situation as “life-threatening” and expressed feelings of fear due to the ongoing conflict, as well as abandonment by the UK government. Craig and Lindsay Foreman have made their first public communication since the outbreak of war on 28 February, speaking through their son, Joe Bennett. The couple were arrested in January 2025 during a global motorcycle trip, which had taken them from Europe towards Australia.
Craig Foreman, speaking from Evin prison in Tehran where they are currently held, insisted that the accusations against them are baseless and fabricated by Iranian authorities to justify their 10-year prison sentences. He appealed to the British government to publicly acknowledge their innocence and to label the charges for what they are—false. “We are not spies. The charges against us are simply not true,” Foreman maintained, highlighting their frustration at the lack of official support and information during such a dangerous time.
Their son, Joe Bennett, has painted a grim picture of the conditions within Evin prison, describing overcrowded cells with metal bunks and no mattresses, worsening food shortages, and an absence of medical care. The couple have been separated into different cells, and recent nearby explosions caused by US-Israeli military activity have made their environment increasingly perilous. Furthermore, the family revealed that the Foremans were not informed when British embassy personnel temporarily withdrew from Iran last month, deepening their sense of isolation. Joe Bennett shared that his mother, Lindsay, has struggled emotionally, feeling “completely lost” and “abandoned by her own government.”
Despite warnings on the Foreign Office website advising against travel to Iran due to the risk of detention for British passport holders or those with UK ties, Craig and Lindsay Foreman entered the country legally, holding valid visas and travelling with a tour guide on a pre-approved itinerary. Lindsay, a life coach, had been using the journey to explore what it means to live a good life by engaging with people along their route. However, after what their family terms a “sham trial,” both received decade-long sentences last month. The Foreign Secretary condemned the sentencing as “completely appalling and totally unjustified.” Nevertheless, their son criticized the British government for a perceived lack of decisive action, contrasting it with more assertive efforts seen in France and Germany to secure their citizens’ release.
