Comedian Sara Pascoe has expressed admiration for anyone who undergoes IVF treatment, describing it as a significant challenge to the body. Speaking candidly about her own experiences, Pascoe, who is 44 years old, revealed that both of her sons—born in 2022 and 2023—were conceived through IVF.
During an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, Pascoe explained that incorporating her IVF journey into her stand-up comedy felt like a positive way to address a subject that often leaves people feeling isolated. She has long been open about her personal life in her work, including discussing her abortion at age 17 in her autobiography.
Pascoe shared that initially, when she and her husband, comedian Steen Raskopoulos, began trying to have children through IVF, the topic was too raw for her to make humorous. “I only really spoke about infertility once I had children and it was reflexing. I also think that’s because I couldn’t be funny about it until I knew the ending,” she said. It wasn’t until her eldest son Theo was eight months old that she felt prepared to bring the subject into her comedy, saying, “It was really like: ‘I definitely have a son. He survived. He’s alive, he’s here.’” She wanted to connect with people at various stages of their own fertility journeys while also emphasizing that in comedy, the audience needs to sense the performer is okay emotionally.
Pascoe also discussed an incident where her agent advised her against including a story about her abortion in her 2016 book *Animal: The Autobiography of a Female Body*. Despite this, Pascoe has always prioritized sharing her personal experiences over maintaining privacy, stating, “The sharing always feels like so much more important than any privacy.” She added, “I’m not embarrassed. I’ve never really felt uncomfortable talking about a biographical detail.” Since beginning her stand-up career in 2007, Pascoe has appeared on well-known panel shows such as *Have I Got News For You*, *QI*, and *Would I Lie to You?* In addition to her comedy, she has authored three books, including the novel *Weirdo*, which won the Jilly Cooper Prize for fiction last year
