A new crime thriller, drawing its inspiration from one of the most infamous heists in British and Irish history, has recently been released. The film revolves around two bank employees who were coerced into robbing the Northern Bank in Belfast in December 2004, after their families were held hostage. During this tense 24-hour ordeal, a total of £26.5 million was stolen, loaded into a van, and spirited away from the Donegall Square West branch. This gripping story serves as the foundation for the fictional narrative in the movie.
Titled *No Ordinary Heist*, the film is both directed and co-written by Colin McIvor. It stars Eddie Marsan and Éanna Hardwicke, who portray the two men caught up in the harrowing event. Marsan, known for his roles in films such as *Back To Black* and *Happy Go Lucky*, was drawn to the script during a holiday. After reading the script and meeting McIvor, he quickly realized that the film closely related to real events, but chose to focus on the intense relationship between the two men at the centre of the robbery.
The film was shot on location in both Belfast and Dublin, capturing the claustrophobic, pressure-filled atmosphere of tight elevator shafts and bank vaults where much of the story unfolds. Hardwicke described the experience as “incredibly rich and exciting,” noting the constant shift in tension and the looming deadline that gave the story its urgency. The stakes in the film were especially high because the characters’ families had been kidnapped and held hostage
