A 34-year-old Iranian man and a 31-year-old Romanian woman have been charged following their attempt to gain access to HM Naval Base Clyde, situated near Helensburgh in Argyll and Bute. This naval base is notably the location of the United Kingdom’s nuclear-armed submarine fleet. The arrests occurred around 5 p.m. on Thursday, according to Police Scotland.
The two individuals are scheduled to appear before Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Monday. However, the specific nature of the charges they face will not be disclosed until their court appearance. HM Naval Base Clyde, commonly known as Faslane, lies on the Gare Loch about 40 kilometers northwest of Glasgow and serves as the operational home for all of the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarines.
Among the vessels based at Faslane are the four Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines, which are equipped to carry the UK’s Trident nuclear missiles. This location has a long history of attracting anti-war activism, particularly from groups like the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). Since 1982, a peace camp has operated near the site, initially established in protest against the Thatcher government’s purchase of the Trident missile system. This protest community continues to engage in regular demonstrations, vigils, and direct actions aimed at opposing nuclear weapons.
In addition to its strategic role in hosting the UK’s nuclear deterrent, Faslane is also home to Astute-class submarines, which are nuclear-powered but carry conventional armaments. The UK’s stockpile of nuclear warheads is stored nearby at the Royal Naval Armaments Depot (RNAD) Coulport on Loch Long. The British government has maintained a policy of continuous at-sea nuclear deterrence since 1969, first with Polaris missiles and then with Trident missiles. These nuclear-powered submarines have the capability to remain submerged for extended periods, providing a persistent deterrent at sea
