'I feel so grateful to be alive,' Kent University meningitis survivor says

Annabelle Mackay, a 21-year-old student studying law at the University of Kent, has shared her story with the BBC after surviving a meningitis infection. She suspects that she may have been exposed to the illness on March 5th at Club Chemistry, although she also considers the possibility that she contracted it during an earlier night out at another location.

To date, the outbreak has resulted in 29 confirmed cases of meningitis. In response, health authorities have initiated a vaccination campaign targeting students to help control the spread of the infection. The programme aims to prevent further cases and protect those who may be at risk.

Reflecting on her experience, Mackay expressed deep gratitude for her survival, stating, “I feel so grateful to be alive and to be here. I’m still dealing with the aftereffects now, but I think I just need to focus on my recovery and getting better and back to myself.” Despite the challenges she continues to face, her determination to recover remains steadfast.

This recent outbreak has raised concerns within the student community and health services, prompting swift action to manage the situation. Efforts continue to ensure those affected receive appropriate care and support as the vaccination efforts progress
