British man accused of shooting partner in France

French authorities have taken a British man into custody on suspicion of murder following the fatal shooting of his partner. The incident occurred near Brillac, a town in southwest France, where the victim was found with gunshot wounds.

The suspect, identified as 47-year-old George Goodayle, is accused of killing his 49-year-old British partner, Jayne Nicholson. French officials reported that Nicholson sustained two bullet wounds to her upper body, and a firearm was recovered at the location. Goodayle voluntarily surrendered to the police and insisted that the shooting was accidental. It was also confirmed by authorities that neither Goodayle nor Nicholson had previous interactions with French law enforcement.

According to the investigation, the couple had been in a relationship since June 2025. Goodayle appeared in court on Wednesday, where he was formally placed under investigation. The French prosecutor, Benoît Bernard, informed the BBC that Goodayle will remain in detention pending his trial. Authorities also stated that there were no prior complaints or reports of domestic violence related to the couple.

Locally, Jayne Nicholson was known in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, before moving to France. She was described as a dog breeder and horse enthusiast who managed Croft Farm, a boarding kennel located in Thorpe in Balne. Meanwhile, Goodayle had been living in Brillac since 2016. Social media posts indicate that in the UK, Goodayle was previously a dancer with the male strip show Dreamboys, where he was referred to as “Gorgeous George.” The BBC has reached out to both Dreamboys and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office for comment
