London’s Mayor, Sir Sadiq Khan, has urged the Labour Party to enter the upcoming general election with a commitment to rejoin the European Union. He also proposed that the UK should re-enter both the customs union and the single market prior to the election anticipated in 2029. These comments come despite repeated statements from Downing Street asserting that the government will not pursue membership in either economic arrangement.
In a notable interview with the Italian newspaper la Repubblica, Sir Sadiq described rejoining the EU as “inevitable” and hinted that this could happen without the need for another referendum. He emphasized the considerable negative impact Brexit has had across London, affecting economic, social, and cultural aspects of life, while also pointing to external factors like US tariffs and conflicts in Iran as aggravating the cost-of-living crisis. “I see on a daily basis the damage Brexit has done to not just London, but Londoners,” he said.
Responding to Khan’s remarks, a Conservative Party spokesman criticized Labour’s leadership, stating, “Keir Starmer is in office but not in power,” and accusing key Labour figures of controlling major policy areas, including foreign affairs and immigration. The spokesman praised Conservative measures focused on welfare reductions, tax cuts, and boosting employment. Meanwhile, Sir Sadiq also advocated for reconsideration of parts of the government’s asylum policy crackdown, aligning with concerns expressed by some Labour MPs. He stated, “We want people, if they come here, to properly contribute, to integrate and get involved.”
Other political voices have weighed in on the topic as well. The Reform UK party vowed to oppose any attempts to rejoin the EU’s single market or customs union after the next election. Green Party leader Zack Polanski condemned Brexit as a “disaster socially, culturally, economically,” expressing his hope to see the UK rejoin the EU one day.
