Second man released over Iran spying investigation

A counter-terror operation linked to Iran has resulted in the arrest of four men, with two now released without any charges. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a 52-year-old man detained in Watford was freed on Sunday. Additionally, a 55-year-old individual arrested in Barnet has also been released without charge.

The group of suspects includes one Iranian national and three individuals holding dual British-Iranian citizenship. They were apprehended on March 6 under the National Security Act, suspected of aiding a foreign intelligence service. The investigation centers around allegations of surveillance targeting places and people associated with London’s Jewish community.

At present, two suspects aged 22 and 40 remain in police custody. Authorities have been granted permission to detain them until March 20. Alongside this primary operation, six other men were arrested for allegedly assisting an offender, with an additional person taken into custody on suspicion of assaulting a police officer. These six individuals have since been released on bail as inquiries continue.

Commander Helen Flanagan, who leads Counter Terrorism Policing London, described the arrests as components of “a long-running investigation” and part of “ongoing work to disrupt malign activity where we suspect it.” Police will continue their efforts as they pursue this investigation
