New archbishop of Canterbury to undertake six-day pilgrimage

Dame Sarah Mullally, the new Archbishop of Canterbury, is set to undertake a significant six-day pilgrimage prior to her installation ceremony. Accompanied by her husband Eamonn, she will walk the 140-kilometer (87-mile) route from St Paul’s Cathedral in London to Canterbury Cathedral. This journey is scheduled to conclude ahead of her installation service, which will be held on 25 March.

This pilgrimage marks a unique event in contemporary times, as it is the first instance in modern history that an Archbishop of Canterbury has embarked on such a pilgrimage as preparation for their installation. Along the way, Dame Sarah and her group will participate in prayer services at various religious sites including churches, cathedrals, and abbeys. Their itinerary will include stops at notable locations such as Southwark Cathedral, Aylesford Priory, the Shrine of St Jude in Faversham, Lesnes Abbey, and Rochester Cathedral, according to Lambeth Palace.

During the journey, the pilgrims will engage with local communities, meeting other pilgrims and visiting schools. The final part of their route will see them joined by David Monteith, Dean of Canterbury, and members of the Cathedral chapter. Together, they will walk from the village of Chartham to Canterbury, arriving in time for the evensong service on Sunday, 22 March. In addition, the group plans to distribute prayer cards that feature a prayer composed by pupils from The Archbishop’s School in Canterbury.

Reflecting on this momentous occasion, Dame Sarah expressed her thoughts: “As I prepare for my installation at Canterbury Cathedral, it feels deeply humbling to be following in the footsteps of those who have walked this ancient route. For centuries, faithful pilgrims have flocked to Canterbury, and I will be reflecting on this tradition as we make our way through the Kent countryside and its towns and cities. I’m looking forward to visiting local churches, cathedrals and holy sites along the route – and to meeting people, praying with them and hearing their stories.
