A 69-year-old man from Bridgend, Christopher Lavis, was violently assaulted after adhering to a 20mph speed limit while driving to a hospital appointment. Lavis sustained serious injuries, including fractures to his cheekbone in three places, a broken nose, and a fractured eye socket, when Christopher Shaw, a 40-year-old man from Bettws, punched him during a roadside altercation.
Lavis recounted that he had left his home in Brynmenyn around 8:30 am, heading to the hospital for a heart X-ray. While driving at the legal speed, a van began tailgating him, flashing its lights and sounding the horn to express impatience. The situation escalated when Lavis stopped at a junction near the Fox and Hounds pub in the village. Shaw exited his vehicle, approached Lavis’s car, opened the driver’s door, and after shouting and swearing, struck Lavis in the face before walking back to his van and leaving the scene. Despite his injuries and bleeding, Lavis continued on to his hospital appointment.
Following the incident, Shaw pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm on 30 July 2025. He was sentenced to a one-year jail term, which was suspended for two years. Additionally, he was required to pay £1,500 in compensation and complete 50 hours of unpaid work. Lavis expressed dissatisfaction with the sentence, pointing out that the judge had taken Shaw’s employment status as a roofer into account to avoid incarceration. Lavis emphasized the innocence of his actions, saying, “This was just hitting an innocent person for doing nothing more than driving at 20mph,” and noted that Shaw never apologized or showed any remorse, adding, “He could have killed me. I’m nearly 70 years of age.”
Elizabeth Lavis, Christopher’s wife, who was present during the attack, described the traumatic experience as shocking. She recalled being stunned by the intensity of Shaw’s language and the scene unfolding in front of her, saying, “I’d never heard so many swear words in all my life. I couldn’t believe it, you know, it was like things were happening in slow motion, and then the blood started flowing.” After the assault, she confronted Shaw, demanding to know why he had attacked her husband. Since the incident, Christopher has suffered from increased anxiety and balance issues, and both he and Elizabeth have become reluctant to drive. Elizabeth highlighted the challenges of maintaining the 20mph limit and the discomfort caused by aggressive drivers, stating, “It is frustrating and when somebody is right up your backside, either flashing or becoming angry because you’re doing 20 mph – it’s unnerving.” She concluded by reflecting on their efforts to obey the law and lamenting that Shaw broke it through his violent behavior
