UK opens charter flights booking portal for Britons in Dubai

The Foreign Office has recently launched a booking portal aimed at British citizens currently in Dubai who wish to utilize government-organized charter flights to leave the Middle East. This initiative comes in response to the disruption caused by the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, which has led to numerous flight cancellations and widespread airspace closures throughout the region. Many Britons, including those in Dubai, have found themselves stranded as a result.

Priority for seats on these charter flights will be given to the most vulnerable individuals. The Foreign Office plans to reach out directly to those who have registered their presence in the Middle East through official channels. So far, government flights have been operating out of Muscat, Oman, with two flights having successfully returned to the UK. Additionally, a flight departing from Dubai is planned for early next week.

The ongoing conflict continues to affect the United Arab Emirates. On Saturday, there was a tragic incident in Dubai’s Al Barsha area, where a resident was killed due to shrapnel from an “aerial interception,” according to the Dubai Media Office. The Foreign Office has recorded over 160,000 British nationals in the region who have registered with them. In the meantime, Emirates airline has transported around 30,000 passengers out of Dubai on Thursday alone, operating 35 flights to the UK since services resumed.

At Dubai Airport on Friday morning, BBC’s Nick Beake observed a calm and orderly atmosphere with a steady flow of arrivals, noting the absence of large groups of expatriates seeking to leave. Among those sharing their personal accounts is Victoria Cameron from Larkhall, Scotland. She described the frightening moment on 28 February when Iranian missiles first struck Dubai as she was waiting to enter her hotel. “Our phones were going off, saying ’emergency, emergency’. We were crying, we were shaking,” she shared. Cameron has since returned safely to Edinburgh on an Emirates flight this past Wednesday
