Paddington musical sweeps WhatsOnStage awards

Paddington The Musical has emerged as the standout success at the latest WhatsOnStage Awards, securing an impressive nine wins following its debut on the West End stage last year. The production, inspired by Michael Bond’s beloved children’s stories and the recent film adaptations, premiered at the Savoy Theatre in November and quickly became a favourite among audiences and critics alike.

The musical’s nine awards represent the highest number ever achieved by a new musical and tie the record previously held by Miss Saigon and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Among the numerous accolades, Paddington was honoured with best new musical as well as best professional debut, awarded to the 17-year-old actor Timi Akinyosade. The show also collected prizes recognising outstanding direction, costume, make-up, and sound design, underlining its broad appeal and artistic achievements.

Several notable performers were celebrated at the event as well. Rachel Zegler, renowned for her roles in West Side Story and Snow White, won two awards: best performer in a musical for Evita and best concert event for her live show at The London Palladium. Evita’s production, directed by Jamie Lloyd, gained widespread attention thanks to a unique twist in which Zegler performed “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” from the theatre’s outdoor balcony, an act echoed by the large crowds it attracted. Evita itself won five awards, including best musical revival.

Other distinguished winners included Jonathan Bailey, who was recognised as best performer in a play for his role in a contemporary interpretation of Shakespeare’s Richard II, outshining competitors such as Tom Hiddleston and Rosamund Pike. Amber Davies, fresh from her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing, took home the award for best supporting actor in a musical for The Great Gatsby, while Sir Stephen Fry was named best supporting performer in a play for his work in The Importance of Being Earnest. The WhatsOnStage Awards, held at the London Palladium, are unique in that winners are chosen by the public, further highlighting Paddington’s popularity
