Jade Jones, a two-time Olympic taekwondo gold medalist, made an impressive entrance into the boxing ring with a knockout win in just the second round against Egypt Criss in Derby. After spending twenty years competing in taekwondo, the Welsh athlete decided to change disciplines early last year. She expressed a desire for a new challenge and set an ambitious goal: to become a world champion in two different sports.
Jones faced Egypt Criss in her debut match, who is notably the daughter of hip-hop legends Anthony ‘Treach’ Criss from Naughty by Nature and Sandra ‘Pepa’ Denton from Salt-N-Pepa. Demonstrating her quick adaptability, Jones secured victory swiftly by landing three consecutive left hooks that knocked Criss down.
Having secured Olympic titles in both London 2012 and Rio 2016, the 32-year-old from Flint has been honing her boxing skills under the guidance of former professional boxer Stephen ‘Swifty’ Smith at Liverpool’s renowned 4 Corners Gym. This training has helped her transition effectively from martial arts to boxing.
In addition to professional coaching, Jones draws motivation from unified world boxing champion Lauren Price. Price, a former footballer for Wales, also has experience in kickboxing and taekwondo before switching to boxing, serving as an inspiration for Jones during her own sporting evolution
