A man has tragically passed away outside Glasgow’s drug consumption facility, known as The Thistle. Authorities responded promptly to the incident, which was reported around 10:20 on Sunday morning, and secured the entrance to the site on Hunter Street.
Investigations by the police are currently ongoing, with officials indicating that there are no apparent suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. A formal report of the incident will be submitted to the procurator fiscal for further consideration.
The Thistle, which began operating in January 2025, is the United Kingdom’s first officially sanctioned safer drug consumption facility. This center provides a space where individuals can use heroin or cocaine under medical supervision without fear of prosecution, aiming to reduce harm and improve public health outcomes.
Managed by Glasgow City Integration Joint Board—a collaboration between Glasgow City Council and the local health board—the facility is part of a three-year pilot program. Within its first year, The Thistle registered 575 users.
