Great Britain’s flagbearers for the upcoming Games, skiing pair Menna Fitzpatrick and Scott Meenagh, will not be present at the opening ceremony due to their competition schedule the following day in Cortina. Rather than attending in person, they will appear alongside other members of the ParalympicsGB team in a video presentation that will be part of the parade.
Phil Smith, the ParalympicsGB chef de mission, explained the reasoning behind this choice to BBC Sport. He revealed that the decision was made about a year in advance, once it became clear that the opening ceremony location was quite distant from where the athletes would be training and competing in the mountains. Smith noted that several other nations face similar logistical challenges.
Athletes who do participate in the ceremony from Cortina would face a tough return trip to the athlete village, arriving only very late at night—between two and three in the morning. Given that all British competitors in Cortina are scheduled to perform on the first day of the Games, prioritizing rest and performance was key.
The Paralympic Winter Games are set to take place from March 6 through March 15, with the British team focusing on their events rather than the ceremony itself
