Radio 1's Big Weekend: Fatboy Slim and Sonny Fodera to headline

BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend is set to return to Sunderland this year, with DJs Fatboy Slim and Sonny Fodera headlining the dance-focused opening day of the festival. Taking place at Herrington Country Park from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 May, the event promises a vibrant start with performances from notable artists including Australian producer FISHER, Birmingham-born singer Clementine Douglas, and American DJ MK.

Fatboy Slim, whose real name is Norman Cook, is a familiar name on the UK festival scene, known for hits like “Praise You,” “Right Here, Right Now,” and “The Rockafeller Skank.” Alongside him, Australian DJ Sonny Fodera will bring his emotive house music to the stage. The lineup on Friday will also feature a mix of Radio 1 DJs such as Arielle Free, Danny Howard, Charlie Hedges, and Sarah Story. In addition, German DJ HorsegiirL and Scottish producer Ewan McVicar will perform, while bassline DJ Notion, trance DJ Marlon Hoffstadt, house DJ L.P. Rhythm, and a back-to-back set by Ahadadream and Arthi round out the day’s offerings.

Sunderland previously hosted the festival in May 2005, an event that included artists like Gwen Stefani, Foo Fighters, and the Black Eyed Peas. This year’s edition is expected to attract tens of thousands of fans, with around 100 acts across the three days of music. Tickets for the Friday event, costing £34.50 for general admission and £86.00 for VIP, are limited to attendees aged 18 and over. General admission for Saturday and Sunday will be priced at £44.50, with VIP tickets at £106.00, and these tickets go on sale on Wednesday at 17:00 GMT. Younger festival-goers aged 15 and under may attend the weekend dates if accompanied by an adult.

BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend is known for moving locations each year, often choosing towns and cities that rarely host major live music events. Previous stops have included Norwich, Swansea, Exeter, Dundee, and Londonderry, featuring artists like Taylor Swift, Stormzy, The 1975, and Bruno Mars. Last year’s festival in Liverpool drew around 100,000 attendees and was nicknamed the “Scouse Coachella,” headlined by acts such as Tom Grennan, Sam Fender, and Mumford & Sons, with surprise performances including Ed Sheeran
