A tragic incident occurred in North Lanarkshire when a man lost his life after falling from a window during a fire in a tower block. The blaze broke out late on Thursday night, specifically around 22:08, on the 12th floor of a building located on Shields Drive in Motherwell. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) responded promptly to the emergency call reporting the fire.
According to Police Scotland, the man was observed falling from the window amid the fire, which has since been brought under control and extinguished. Unfortunately, he was declared dead at the scene. Emergency response teams deployed a total of nine fire engines along with specialist equipment to tackle the situation. Thankfully, no other injuries were reported among the building’s occupants.
Stephen Nesbit, an area commander for the SFRS, expressed his condolences, stating, “Sadly, one male passed away at the scene. Our thoughts are very much with his family, friends, and wider community at this difficult time.” He confirmed that although the fire was now out, one fire appliance remained at the site to deal with any remaining hotspots that could reignite.
Looking ahead, Nesbit mentioned that both the SFRS and Police Scotland will conduct a joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire and the man’s tragic fall. On Friday, visible signs of fire damage could still be seen on the building’s exterior, including black charring around the affected window
