The owner of a water park has issued a stark warning that he will drain the lake if young trespassers do not stop swimming there at night. Pete Boyle, who runs Let’s Go Hydro in Carryduff, expressed deep concern about the risks posed by unauthorized swimmers and admitted that the possibility of someone drowning has caused him sleepless nights.
Boyle emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “I simply cannot have that risk in my life. If we cannot keep them out, there’s only one thing left to do and that’s to empty the lake.” The outdoor activity center has recently invested £30,000 in new fencing and also employs CCTV surveillance to deter intruders. Despite these efforts, children have continued to break in during the evenings, arriving around 8 p.m. and staying until close to midnight.
The water within the lake is dangerously cold, with temperatures recently measured at about eight degrees Celsius. Boyle warned of the severe hazard this presents, noting, “If you go in that lake, you’ve got about eight minutes before you will die.” Highlighting the dangers, he pointed out that while the park maintains strict safety protocols including lifeguards and life jackets during normal operating hours, the situation changes drastically when people enter at night without any protection or means of rescue.
Local officials have also spoken out about the risks. Alliance Party MLA Kate Nicholl stressed the importance of children’s safety and urged both young people and parents to exercise caution. She highlighted that the late-night timing of the trespassing means no immediate help would be available in an emergency. Other community leaders like Sinn Féin councillor Daniel Basset and Social Democratic and Labour Party councillor John Gallon echoed these concerns, calling for cooperation among local groups to prevent further incidents and emphasizing the extreme danger of swimming in the lake after dark
