Hereford couple quit 9-5 to live and work on campsite in Wales

After enduring the pressures and time constraints of traditional work, many people fantasize about leaving their 9-to-5 jobs behind, buying a campervan, and hitting the open road. However, for most, these thoughts quickly dissipate amid everyday responsibilities and the demands of routine employment. This wasn’t the case for 29-year-old Shane Williams and Sarah Camden, who both decided to fully embrace this lifestyle change when their full-time jobs were keeping them apart.

Shane, previously an estate agent, and Sarah, who worked in banking, realized that their schedules left them spending only a few hours together each day, often while living with their parents. Shane recalled, “My job involved a lot of driving so I wasn’t arriving home until around six or seven each evening. We were also living with our parents so we were only spending about two hours with each other.” Frustrated by the limited time together, Sarah took a chance and applied for a role she spotted advertising work at a campsite near Wrexham. Surprisingly, within just three weeks, they had purchased a mobile home and were preparing to relocate from Hereford to a new life in North Wales.

Since settling on the campsite, the couple’s daily work includes cutting grass, helping maintain the grounds, and managing guest check-ins. Shane admitted that the transition came with a learning curve: “I had never set foot in a touring caravan before so I didn’t know how to do little things like how to change the toilet.” Now, three years later, both agree it was one of the best decisions they’ve made. Living costs have significantly dropped for the pair since they no longer worry about mortgage or rent payments, and their caravan pitch comes free of charge. They also enjoy no water or electricity bills, a complimentary golf membership, and discounted drinks at the site’s bar, with salaries that compare favorably to their previous earnings.

Aside from their work, Shane and Sarah love spending time outdoors and exploring Wales on their days off, often traveling to new campsites and camping spots. Shane shared their social media success, explaining how a sunset video they recorded on the Llyn Peninsula went viral: “I posted it online and it got millions of views. So we continued posting on our page about the tour and then we had campsites messaging us inviting us to review their sites.” This exposure has provided an additional source of income through free stays and partnerships. Despite some criticism from others, Sarah emphasized their freedom, saying, “We don’t have children, a house or any dependents or commitments. So it’s easy for us to make this decision. We’re doing it how we want to do it.” The couple plans to continue this lifestyle indefinitely and are even considering opening their own campsite someday. As Sarah reflected, “Usually with these types of roles, you do one season and then move on. We know that we’ll be doing this for the rest of our lives. Even if we do decide to move campsites, that’s the beauty of this role.
