Donations of £15k over James Bulger's Kirkdale grave damage

Over £15,000 has been raised through donations to restore the grave of James Bulger, a toddler whose memorial was recently vandalised. The damage occurred at Kirkdale Cemetery in Liverpool, where two cherub statues flanking James’s headstone were found decapitated on Thursday.

James Bulger, who was just two years old, was tragically abducted from his mother in February 1993 at a shopping centre in Bootle. The abduction and subsequent murder were carried out by Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, both of whom were ten years old at the time. The case remains one of the most harrowing in recent UK history.

Denise Fergus, James’s mother, expressed her heartbreak upon learning of the vandalism. She shared her feelings, saying, “I’m devastated someone could be so cruel and hurtful to my James.” Fergus revealed that a dog walker informed her about the damage, prompting her to rush to the cemetery herself. She added, “I need to find whoever has done this to my son’s resting place.”

Officials from Merseyside Police condemned the act, calling it “abhorrent and truly shocking.” The community’s response through donations highlights their support for James Bulger’s memory and the family’s ongoing grief
