A 22-year-old man appeared in Dublin District Court facing a murder charge connected to the death of an English tourist who succumbed to injuries sustained in an incident last year in Dublin’s Temple Bar area. Initially, the accused, Darragh O’Brien from Beechfield Heights, Clonee, Dublin, was charged with assault causing harm following an altercation on 21 August at Temple Bar Square.
Shortly after the attack, O’Brien was granted conditional bail and continued to attend court proceedings. However, during his latest appearance on Friday, the charge against him was escalated to murder. When the charge was read, the defendant made no reply, as noted by a Garda officer present in court.
The Garda also informed the judge that the Director of Public Prosecutions had authorized withdrawing the original assault charge, focusing solely on the murder count. This charge will now progress to the Central Criminal Court for a full trial. The victim, Anthony Herron, a man in his 40s and father living in London, had been leaving a nearby pub when he was attacked.
Following the assault, Herron was admitted to St James’s Hospital and later transferred to Beaumont Hospital for urgent specialist surgery. He was eventually sent back to the UK, where he passed away in October. Due to the gravity of the murder charge, O’Brien was not eligible to apply for bail during his court appearance and was remanded in custody to appear at Cloverhill District Court next Thursday.
