Liverpool City Council took the decision to close a convenience store located in Tuebrook following the discovery of a severe mouse infestation and evidence that some food items had been chewed by rodents. The store, known as L6 Continental and situated on West Derby Road, initially came under scrutiny after the Council’s Environmental Health Officers received complaints of mouse activity.
The first inspection took place on Wednesday, 11 February, where officers uncovered numerous troubling signs of poor pest management. Mouse droppings were scattered throughout the shop, including on both the food display shelves and the floor. Dead mice were found trapped on glue boards, and a live mouse was even seen within the premises during the visit. These findings indicated a significant hygiene problem in the store.
Despite the operator voluntarily shutting down the business in response to these issues, the store was found to be operating again just two days later, violating the voluntary closure notice. Upon a follow-up inspection on Friday, 13 February, officers observed that several ready-to-eat items such as crisps, nuts, and biscuits had visible gnaw marks. Additional evidence of contamination included faeces and urine on the display units.
Given the serious health risks posed by these conditions, the Council served a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice, which immediately closed the shop due to the imminent danger to public health. Subsequently, a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order was issued at a Liverpool and Knowsley Magistrates Court hearing held on Wednesday, 25 February. The business operator was ordered to pay £3,220 in costs. At the time of closure, the shop received the lowest possible food hygiene rating of zero.
